D4S4 – The Pit Guide and How to Unlock

The Pit is an endgame dungeon in Diablo 4. Check out our guide to learn how to unlock and prepare for The Pit, including information on its rewards, how to enter, and much more.
What is The Pit?
New Timed Dungeon

The Pit is the Artificer’s Timed Dungeon where you must fill up a bar by slaying enemies within 10 minutes to open a portal leading to a random dungeon boss. Defeating these bosses can drop the Diablo 4 materials used for Masterworks.

Dying inside this dungeon incurs a death penalty, reducing the remaining time based on the dungeon’s tier level.
The Pit Progression Tips
Get 9230 Armor

To progress in The Pit, maximize your survivability by understanding the new armor system. The new armor system has a final cap value. Achieving 9230 Armor provides 85% damage reduction to physical attacks.
Further Armor Increase Has Zero Benefits

Similar to Resistances, you cannot gain further damage reduction from armor beyond the 9230 armor cap. Any additional armor becomes a wasted stat once you reach this cap. Focus on obtaining max armor from your gear before allocating stats to other resistances.
Get 70% Resistance to All Elements

Mitigate damage from non-physical attacks by aiming for 70% resistance to all elements. Achieve this by equipping elemental resistance gear and using gems with max implicit stats for additional resistance.
Single Resistance Gems are More Efficient Than Diamonds

Diamonds provide resistances to all elements, but other colored gems offer specific resistances when socketed. Prioritize rolling for elemental resistance affixes on your gear, then use gems to cover any remaining resistances.

For example, if your armor provides cold and fire resistance, craft gems to cover lightning, shadow, and poison resistance and equip them in your gem slots.
Further Enhance Your Survivability

Max resistance and armor are the minimum requirements to avoid instant deaths in The Pit. Adjust the aspects on your gear to include those that help circumvent lethal damage. Skills that allow you to escape enemy attacks are also highly recommended.
Exiting Will Close The Pit

Exiting The Pit permanently closes it, so prepare thoroughly before attempting the dungeon. Incomplete runs will waste your materials.
Be Sure to Repair Beforehand

Unlike the Abbatoir of Zir, you can continue your run after dying in The Pit. However, dying incurs durability loss. If your gear breaks, you cannot repair it without exiting. Repair your gear before entering The Pit.
How to Unlock The Pit
Use the Portal Activator in Cerrigar

To enter The Pit, use the Portal Activator in Cerrigar. The town’s waypoint is unlocked by default. However, you must meet several prerequisites to use the portal.
Reach World Tier 4

Reaching World Tier 4 is one of the first requirements to activate the portal.
Complete a Tier 46 Nightmare Dungeon

In addition to reaching World Tier 4, you must complete a Tier 46 Nightmare Dungeon. The specific dungeon does not matter as long as it is Tier 46 or higher.
How to Enter The Pit
Use Runeshards on the Obelisk

Activate the Artificer’s Obelisk in Cerrigar and use a Runeshard to enter The Pit. Runeshards can be obtained by completing Whisper Bounties, Nightmare Dungeons, or participating in Helltides or Legion Events.
